My Summer with Move38
In the summer of 2020, amidst social distancing and a global pandemic, I worked remotely at Move38 as a game design intern. During my internship I wrote game instructions, play-tested games, fixed bugs in the code, and worked on the development of two new games for the Blinks platform.
Here’s some of the greatest hits:
Making the Graphics for Crownfall
Working with my cohort of game developer interns Robert Canciello, Connor Wolf, and Nicole Polidore, we created a new game for the Blinks platform called Crownfall. Crownfall is like a cross between bocce ball and chess, where two armies made up of 9 unique roles compete to stay on the battlefield. My main task on this game was to create 9 unique animations to distinguish the 9 roles. These animations would need to be visually distinctive for both the red team and blue team without taking up too much space in the code. After many rounds of feedback and iterating, the animations were finalized. Though Blinks may appear to have a simple display of 6 RGB LEDs, the process of coming up with clear and distinct graphics brings many challenges.
Developing Treasure Tumble
In addition to developing Crownfall as an intern at move38, I also developed the game Treasure Tumble independently. Treasure Tumble is the first vertically oriented game for the Blinks platform, where players compete to collect falling pieces of treasure. Check out this post on the Blinks forum to read more about the development process.
Both Treasure Tumble and Crownfall are part of the Blinks Epic Adventure Expansion. This is my first time having a game I’ve worked on be published and I couldn’t be prouder.
I also just caught this little shoutout in the Blinks Discord that made me really happy.
And this review posted by The Board Game Kaptain warmed my heart:
I had a great time working with Move38 on Blinks. Their team is fantastic and the community is so kind and supportive. If you’re interested in developing or playing with Blinks I highly recommend checking them out!
