Hateful Hands was a puppet-based interpretation of William Shakespeare's Macbeth, that highlighted the plays themes of manipulation and the supernatural by portraying specific characters as puppets/masks while others were human. I directed the production as well as designed and fabricated all the puppets in the show over the course of my senior year. The play was performed at my high school as my senior thesis and at the 2016 San Diego International Fringe Festival, where it won the "Fringe Hustle" award in recognition of my efforts as a producer.
The show featured a fusion of hand puppets, masks, and shadow projection to accomplish different special effects.
For example, in the Banquo’s ghost scene, a backlit shadow projection of Banquo haunted Macbeth’s banquet, manipulating physical objects on the stage from beyond the grave.
In the witches’ cauldron scene, the cauldron was re-interpreted as a mechanical fortune teller that was powered by the witches’ brew. When Macbeth came to demand his fortune, the witches handed him a token to put into the machine.
