Critter 1: Zen Goblin
I modeled a little Zen Goblin creature in Fusion 360, designed to be printed at any scale without supports. Fusion 360 presents interesting creative challenges for this kind of work as it is a CAD software and not as equipped for modeling organic forms as Maya or Z-Brush. For the Zen Goblin, my biggest breakthrough was using the Sweep tool to extrude circular profiles along paths that created the arms, legs, and fingers.
A Zen Goblin Born
Like all good ideas, the Zen Goblin began in the margins of some notes I was taking for my Anthropology class (this is a running theme...margin doodles). Deciding to model his arms pointing upwards in the classic "zen pose" would make the model easier to print without supports.
Zen Goblin 1
Looks pretty zen to me, don't you agree?
Last minute I decided to rotate the head 5 degrees. This asymmetry helps breathe a little bit of life into the model, and makes the little Goblin appear more serene and contemplative.
Zen Goblin Printed
Sure enough, the model printed beautifully without supports. Would you like to take one home for yourself? Download the Zen Goblin off of Thingiverse! It's free!
